I'm feeling very
proud of my son lately. He just turned 4 (on
March 1st) and with each day he is becoming a
stronger advocate for himself.
Case in
point...
We received an invitation to a
birthday party for one of his classmates and the
party was going to be held at "Little Scoops," a
mini-ice cream parlor for kids. Well, this
immediately raised a red flag with me because of
his allergy. BUT, on the invitation the parent
had noted "Please inform me of any allergies,"
so I decided to give the mom a call.
Turns out the parlor was hers, and was
peanut-allergy friendly! All of the toppings/ice
creams she offers are peanut-free! I accepted
the invitation and my son had a great time.
Thank God for angels, right?
During this
party, my son came to me before the pizza,
before the ice cream, and before the cake to ask
"does it have peanuts, mommy?" THEN, during each
serving, he politely said to the server "Does it
have peanuts? I can't eat peanuts, I'm
allergic." Everyone thought it was so cute and
I'm sure felt a little bad for him...but man
were they impressed! I was, of course!
My little boy is growing up safe and
secure. We have to pat ourselves on the back
from time to time - although I'm sure we forget
to give ourselves credit for raising
self-assured children. We tend to say, "Oh, it's
their personality," or "My child is so smart she
learns on her own." But please do give
yourselves credit for what you offer your
children: self-confidence, encouragement,
self-advocacy skills, and love. Children are a
reflection of ourselves.
